New, OPWN photographs, no more editions.

After a lot of thought and consideration I have decided to no longer make multiples / edition from the negatives I create. I have decided that I only want to make one (1) original photograph from each negative and then destroy the negative when the photograph is sold. The buyer of the OPWN photograph will receive a portion of the destroyed negative with the photograph they acquired to prove that they are in fact buying an original piece of art and not another photograph in the sea of multiples.

With earlier work, I will be closing the editions and selling the last photograph with the destroyed negative. Once the original photograph is sold with the negative it can never be produced again by traditional means. There will only be one original created.

In the case of my earlier work that has not been sold out, there will only be the total number in existence that have been previously sold plus the last one with the negative.

If any of my earlier work was sold out, the negative will be destroyed.

What does OPWN mean?

OPWN stand for Original Photograph with Negative. It means that the photograph is an original hand made photograph that is sold with part of the destroyed negative that was used to create the photograph. An OPWN photograph must be sold with all or part of the destroyed original negative that was used to create the photograph to ensure the buyer of the artwork that the artwork is indeed an original one of a kind photographic work of art and not a copy / reproduction. Just like a painting there should only be 1 photograph created from the negative.

Can you be more specific?

An OPWN photograph can only be a photograph created by traditional processes from start to finish. The image used to create the photograph must have been captured using a traditional analog camera that captures the artist vision on a negative in the camera with final photograph having to be hand printed directly from the original negative to create the final photographic artwork. If digital is used in of any the steps to create the final original photograph, then it is not an OPWN photograph, as there was never an original traditional analog negative to start with.

Why am I selling my photographs with the negative?

Because I believe that photography is just as important an art form as painting or drawings and due to this new found belief, I have come to the realization that photography should be treated as an art form where there is only one original and not multiple copies made from the same negative as the camera is the "brush" we use to paint our visions and the resulting hand made photograph is the "canvas" to share our vision with others. With that said, by destroying the negative, this insures that the photographic artwork is indeed an original one of a kind photographic artwork that can never again be reproduce from the artist by traditional means.
